Beginner Blanket Tutorial – Part 1

We’ll hey there!

Thanks for attending my workshop!

Here is everything we went over during the workshop….

Create a chain to length as per my pattern (81 chain or 50cm)

Skip 2 chains closest to your hook and work one HDC into the 3rd chain.

Remember an HDC goes like this:

Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through one loop.

Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on hook.

Pro Tip!

When working your row of HDC’s, you normally into the top bump, like this…

And end up with an edge like this…

Instead, work your HDC’s into the little bump on the back, like this…

And you’ll have a lovely finish on your edge like this…

Right now that you’re doing your foundation row like a pro lets carry on.

Continue all the way along working 1 HDC into each chain.

Now turn (or flip horizontally)

Chain 2

These 2 chains count as a stitch. Sometimes, on patterns, you’ll see “3ch counts as 1DC here and throughout” this basically means that the chains are the same height as a DC so are pretending to be a DC.

And yes, if you ask your Nan, she’ll probably say that 3 chain = 1DC but I’m different and make my own shit up so just go with it … plus you’ll have neater edges in the long run. Happy days.

Remember an DC goes like this:

Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through one loop.

Yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over and pull through last 2 loops on hook.

Then work another DC into this spot here…

It should look like this…

Skip the next 2 HDC and work 3DC into the third HDC.

Here’s me starting my first group of 3DC

And here they are completed … ta daaaa

Work your way along, working 3DC into every third stitch on the row below.

Now once your at the end (if you are like me a NEVER count your starting chains and have ended up with one too many or too few just skip a stitch a wee way from the edge … no one will EVER know.

Complete your last group, then work 2DC into whats called ‘the turning chain of the previous row” blah blah blah .. its this wee stitch here by the green arrow!

Like this

And it should look like this

Happy days!

Now go get a wine or a coffee or bath your kids for gods sake 🙂

Come back and check out Part Two once you’ve had a wee rest!

Talk soon.
